Talk on the role of women in the history and creation of glass art by Catherine Thomas, curator of the Charleroi Glass Museum.
Long told through the lens of male figures, the history of glass has often relegated women to the background. Yet they have contributed significantly to the glass industry, the transmission of craftsmanship, and artistic creation. Since the 1970s, a profound paradigm shift has taken place: from a world long dominated by men, contemporary glass art has become a field where women play a major role. Drawing on the collections of the Charleroi Glass Museum, this talk aims to highlight their role in the history and creation of glassworks.
About Catherine Thomas
Catherine Thomas holds a Ph.D. in history, arts, and archaeology from the Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium). She became curator of the Charleroi Glass Museum in 2012. Among her research projects, she has published a book titled “Charleroi, entre ombre et lumière, le vitrail dans l’espace privé (c. 1880 – c. 1940)”, which catalogues more than 300 stained-glass windows still in place in private buildings throughout Charleroi. She has also organised several conferences, notably in 2020 on the presence of women in the world of glass and in 2022, as part of the International Year of Glass.
